1998 – 2008 Commemorating 10 Years of Fostering Peace

Many Thanks to Our Sponsors
and Supporters for a Successful

2008 Sweet Charity Ball

On Friday, October 24th, The Jenna Foundation for Non-Violence commemorated the tenth anniversary of the New York State “Jenna’s Law,” and recognized the adult and teenager volunteers who continue our mission through the nationally-recognized “Mentors for Jenna” program at the annual Sweet Charity Ball, held at the Empire Room on the NY State Fairgrounds.

Special guest honorees included retired State Assemblyman Hal Brown, Jr., State Senator John DeFrancisco and Onondaga County District Attorney William J. Fitzpatrick – all of whom were instrumental in their support of the historic passage of the legislation known as “Jenna’s Law,” which served to close loopholes for early release of violent felons, enact a victim notification program (VINE) within the state, along with establishing up to five years post-release supervision for violent felons.

Also honored were Syracuse Schools Superintendent Daniel Lowengard, for his unique role in the success of the “Mentors for Jenna” program – now embedded within the Syracuse City School District – and Jenna Foundation volunteer Kathleen Ryan, who was instrumental in her support of the passage of “Jenna’s Law” through her efforts in community organization.

A great time was had by all, including live dance music by the popular favorites, "Atlas," a festive silent auction, out-of-this-world food provided by the Empire Room and delectable desserts donated by renowned bakers Dina Sakal and Sandy Scaccia.

The Sweet Charity Ball is made possible by Event Sponsors:

The Mentors for Jenna program is now embedded within the Syracuse City School District and in need of your support more than ever. We are making a difference.  During the 2006-07 school year, two hundred high school mentors connected with more than eight hundred 5th grade students to teach a curriculum in non-violence and serve as role models.

As we continue to grow and touch more lives, support from our community is crucial for the survival of this important program.  Beginning with the 2007-08 school year, sponsorships of each elementary school that participates in “Mentors for Jenna” will be available at the $5,000 level, annually.

This significant contribution to our program, and the future of our elementary students, will be publicly recognized in a variety of ways, from media contacts to newsletters and program T-shirts.  We want to get the word out about your investment in our mission to build a safer community for us all.  Call (315) 422-0339 for more information, or send your email inquiry to info@jennafoundation.org.

Many Thanks to the Businesses & Individuals
who became Sponsors during 2007-08 :

ARTICLE HIGHLIGHT

"Executive Notes" by Janice Grieshaber, Executive Director

It hardly seems possible that, as of November 6th, 2007, Jenna had been gone for ten long years. It seems like yesterday. It seems like a hundred years ago. And now, this year, we realize the tenth year of the mentoring program established in her name and feel the same shock. How can that much time have passed? How can we have seen that many children play our games and learn our lessons – we hope.

We hope. It’s all about hope. There is no way to know how many children and how many mentors actually absorb the messages of the lessons. We can only hope that they do and that we change the thinking and thus the lives of some of the children who are mentors and mentees. That’s our goal, to change everyone involved in this program, even the adults who provide oversight.
